BLACK & GOLD

“Then I don’t wanna be either
I wanna be next to you
Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold”

- Sam Sparro’s “Black and Gold”

Ever since the Australian blew up the airwaves with his “Black and Gold” hit, he tapped into the fashion elite’s go-to look by singing the combination of opposing and juxtaposed views. Black and gold originated from the opulence and decadence of the 80s, populated by the big fashion soap operas like “Dynasty.”

Black extravagant ballgowns were the perfect canvases to show off the wealth and excess of dazzling gold jewellery and accessories that were typically adorned.

With any fashion trend, it circles back eventually. This year has been no exception, with canary yellow being the statement colour seen throughout the street style at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia

Yellow is an incredibly difficult colour to wear well, where skin tones and hair colour play a crucial part. But this is fashion week, and what better way to be noticed than such a bright, bold, effervescent colour as yellow.

For men, yellow is possibly the most easy colour to wear. Find yellow detailing in button-up shirts, or tailored shorts, but always keep it understated by teaming the opposing garment in black.

But for the daring, a matching two-piece suit, an understated satin sheath dress, or an overcoat will pop! amongst the crowd. The rise of suiting for women has come a long way from the power dressing of 80s women, becoming more relaxed in tailoring. Stick with a simple double-breasted style with a loose fit and pair it with simple accessories.

For the uninitiated, add the element of yellow or gold accents with the detailing. Be it in shoes or accessories, or in sleeves, the colour will automatically elevate any outfit.

For those with nothing to wear, reverting to the decadence of the 80s will demonstrate a tact for being on trend, while being effortless. Gold chains against a black tee and leather jacket, or a gold miniskirt teamed with black vest, whatever it may be, black and gold is here to stay.
